Baidu CEO Predicts Artificial General Intelligence Over a Decade Away
Despite growing concerns about the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), Robin Li, co-founder and CEO of Baidu, asserts that artificial general intelligence (AGI) is still more than a decade away.
AGI, which refers to AI systems that could surpass human cognitive abilities, has been a topic of concern, with some fearing it could pose an existential risk to humanity.
During a panel discussion at Viva Tech Paris 2024, Li remarked:
"AGI is still quite a few years away, I think more than 10 years away… Today's most powerful [AI] models are far from that. We don't know how to achieve that level of intelligence yet."
This prediction comes on the heels of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin's statement that OpenAI’s GPT-4 generative AI model has passed the Turing test, a contested benchmark designed to determine how humanlike an AI's conversational abilities are.
Li highlighted that Baidu is a leading developer of large language models (LLMs) in China, with around 200 million cumulative AI users.
