X, Led by Elon Musk, Plans to Remove Likes and Reposts from Timeline in Coming Weeks

In the coming weeks, the popular social media platform X may be implementing significant changes to its user interface, including the removal of likes and reposts from the main timeline view. Ellis Driscoll, a software engineer at X, hinted at this development in response to a demo video shared by Christopher Stanley, X's head of payments.

Driscoll clarified that the video showcased a new "more" menu and not the complete user experience. He mentioned that the updated interface would prioritize simplicity, with actions like liking and replying becoming quicker and more intuitive through simple gestures.

Under the proposed changes, users would still be able to see the number of likes and reposts on individual posts but would need to select each post separately to view these metrics. Stanley described the new interaction method as akin to a "video game interface," involving long presses and swipes.

While Instagram implemented a similar move in 2021 to address concerns about the negative impact of public like counts on mental health, X has not provided a clear rationale for its decision beyond enhancing user experience and maximizing screen space for content.

Supporters of the change suggest that it could shift focus towards the quality of posts and reduce the emphasis on engagement metrics. However, critics argue that it might allow X to promote content favored by its internal teams without transparently revealing why certain posts are trending, reminiscent of Instagram and TikTok's algorithms.

As discussions surrounding these potential changes unfold, it remains to be seen how users will adapt to the new interface and whether it will indeed lead to a more balanced and engaging social media experience.
