Hackers take advantage of a Dogecoin bug that causes 69% of nodes to fail.
A hacker has exploited a critical weakness in the Dogecoin network, forcing 69% of its nodes to crash.
Co-founder Andreas Kohl of Sequentia, a Bitcoin sidechain, said on December 12 that he had taken down 69% of the Dogecoin network. Kohl claimed to have carried it out in El Salvador using an outdated laptop.
Prior to the vulnerability being exploited, Dogecoin had 647 active nodes, according to data from Blockchair. Dogecoin only has 315 active nodes as of this writing.
Kohl claimed to have caused the nodes to crash by exploiting a flaw that researcher Tobias Ruck had found.
A vulnerability in DogeReaper that resembles a "Death Note"
An X user named "Department Of DOGE Efficiency" made public a Dogecoin network vulnerability on December 4 that they claim could have completely brought down the chain. The account claims that anyone can remotely crash any Dogecoin node due to the "DogeReaper" vulnerability.
According to the account, the vulnerability works similarly to a "Death Note" from the anime and manga of the same name in Japan. Anyone can write someone's name on a notepad in the fictional universe of Death Notes, causing them to pass away from a heart attack.
According to the account, the vulnerability affects Dogecoin nodes in a similar way. The social media account said that anyone may use the DogeReaper to write the address of a node and cause the node to die of a segmentation fault.
A segmentation fault occurs in computing when a software attempts to access a portion of memory that is prohibited. A crash occurs as a result of the operating system stopping the program for security concerns.
According to the account, "anyone could crash the entire Dogecoin network in an instant" by exploiting the vulnerability because Dogecoin nodes are known to the public. They added, "A malevolent actor could have prevented transactions and blocks on the Dogecoin network for a few days if he had discovered this bug instead of us."
According to the account, Coinbase awarded the Ruck $200 since it considered the vulnerability to be of low severity.
