LayerZero Labs CEO Reports Up to 100,000 Addresses Self-Reported as Airdrop Sybils

LayerZero Labs, a leading contributor to the LayerZero interoperability protocol, recently concluded a self-reporting initiative aimed at mitigating Sybil attacks on its airdrop program. Co-founder and CEO Bryan Pellegrino announced on X that up to 100,000 addresses had self-reported as part of this effort.

To combat the widespread issue of Sybil attacks—where individuals create multiple accounts to unfairly benefit from token airdrops—LayerZero Labs introduced a self-reporting mechanism. The team offered participants 15% of their intended token allocation in exchange for coming forward, with no questions asked. Those who did not self-report would receive no allocation. This initiative saw a significant response, with 100,000 addresses being reported.

Pellegrino emphasized the value of the data collected from this initiative, noting that it would be crucial in identifying other participants using similar methods and software for Sybil activities.

"My intuition is that a confirmed data set of 100,000+ is going to be extremely powerful in finding others either using the same software or similar methodologies. Can’t wait to see what it yields," Pellegrino stated.

LayerZero, which facilitates the transfer of assets and data across different blockchains, conducted its first snapshot on May 1, related to a potential airdrop distribution to its community members. This snapshot, marking the final point at which transactions counted for airdrop eligibility, revealed that 6 million unique wallet addresses had interacted with LayerZero. To address Sybil activity, LayerZero Labs incentivized users to self-report within a two-week window.
